But a layout can look plausible and still make everyday use awkward. A better starting point is not the furniture itself. Start with what the room needs to do . A living room, bedroom, dining room, home office and multipurpose room can all use the same basic decision process, but they do not have the same priorities. How to Map a Room Before Moving Furniture — A Simple Room Constraint Guide

Before deciding where the sofa, table, desk or storage should go, make a simple map of the room you actually have.

You do not need to produce a professional floor plan. For an early room-layout decision, the goal is more practical: record the room information and fixed features that your furniture arrangement will need to work around.

This is the MAP stage of the AHD Room Layout Decision Process.

Understand the physical context before you start testing furniture positions.

Why Map the Room Before You Rearrange It?

Overall room dimensions tell you only part of the story. A wall may be long enough for a piece of furniture but still contain a doorway, window, opening, radiator, built-in or another fixed feature that affects how that area can be used.

Current IKEA planning guidance similarly asks customers to record the dimensions of the space together with the positions or dimensions of doors, windows and other relevant features before discussing layouts. Its interior-design measurement guide also recommends a bird's-eye drawing showing walls, doors, windows, fireplaces and built-ins, including the direction in which doors and windows open.

AHD distinction: mapping does not decide the layout. It establishes the physical context that later layout options must be checked against.

Step 1 — Start With a Rough Bird's-Eye Sketch

Draw the shape before worrying about perfection

Sketch the room as if you were looking down from above. Show the walls and the basic shape of the space. If the room has an alcove, angled section, opening or other irregularity that matters to furniture placement, include it.

The sketch is a working record. It does not need to look architectural or decorative.

Step 2 — Record the Room Measurements You Need

Record the measurements that describe the actual areas you expect to use when testing layouts. Keep the value and its source together.

IKEA's current measurement guidance for planning work likewise records room dimensions and the locations and dimensions of doors, windows, obstacles and fixed features. The exact information needed varies by the project; a general furniture-layout map does not need every technical measurement required for a kitchen installation.

Do not invent precision. If an important measurement is unknown, write it down as NOT VERIFIED rather than filling the gap with a guess.

Step 3 — Add Doors and Openings

Record where they are—not merely that they exist

Mark doors and openings on the sketch in relation to the surrounding walls. Where the operation of a door matters to the layout, show its direction of movement as well.

This helps prevent a common planning mistake: treating a wall as completely available even though part of it must remain compatible with access or operation.

For a normal room-layout exercise, AHD does not prescribe a universal door clearance. If accessibility, fire safety, building rules or another regulated requirement applies to your situation, use the appropriate authoritative source rather than a generic furniture-placement number.

Step 4 — Add Windows

Mark each relevant window and its position. Depending on what you are considering placing near it, additional information such as its relationship to the floor or its operating area may matter.

The important question for this stage is:

Could this window affect where or how I place furniture?

If yes, record the information needed to evaluate that later. If not, do not collect measurements simply to make the worksheet look complete.

Step 5 — Mark the Fixed Features the Layout Must Work Around

Walk around the room and identify features that could affect furniture positions or everyday use.

  • Built-ins
  • Fireplaces or hearths
  • Radiators or heating equipment
  • Columns
  • Fixed cabinetry or counters
  • Closets and storage access
  • Stairs
  • Other permanent or difficult-to-relocate features

This is deliberately broader than measuring walls. IKEA's measurement documentation, for example, explicitly records obstacles such as radiators, columns and other fixed elements when preparing spaces for planning.

Step 6 — Turn Features Into Constraints

A feature and a constraint are not quite the same thing.

Feature: “There is a door on this wall.”

Constraint: “The proposed arrangement needs to remain compatible with using this door.”

Feature: “There is a built-in cabinet here.”

Constraint: “The arrangement needs to account for how this built-in is used.”

This translation is where the room map becomes a decision tool rather than merely a drawing.

For each important feature, ask:
  1. Does it restrict a possible furniture position?
  2. Does it need to remain usable or accessible for my intended use?
  3. Could it conflict with a proposed arrangement?
  4. Is the information I have about it verified?

Step 7 — Separate Verified Information From Assumptions

The AHD Room Layout Decision Process uses three simple information statuses:

  • VERIFIED — checked against the real-world or authoritative source appropriate to the decision.
  • NOT VERIFIED — still an estimate, assumption or unresolved piece of information.
  • NOT APPLICABLE — not relevant to this decision.

Your own measurement of the actual room may be the appropriate source for ordinary room dimensions. Property documentation may sometimes provide useful information. Technical or regulated questions may require a different authoritative source.

The important part is to know which is which.

A Simple Room Constraint Map

When you finish this stage, your working map should let you answer five questions:

  1. What is the basic shape and size information relevant to the layout?
  2. Where are the doors, windows and openings that matter?
  3. Which fixed features could affect furniture placement?
  4. What are the most important physical constraints?
  5. Which consequential pieces of information still need verification?

Once you understand what the room must work around, the next question is what you need the room to do.

What Not to Do Yet

At this stage, resist the urge to decide the final sofa position or buy the furniture that appears to fit your sketch.

You have mapped the physical context. You have not yet established all of the room's functional priorities, verified the relevant furniture information, created alternatives or checked whether those alternatives work.

That distinction is central to this campaign:
